These meetings have provided a valuable forum for sharing experiences, discussing emerging challenges and identifying opportunities to improve industry-wide approaches to EV incident response and recovery.

As a result of these discussions, the group has identified three initial priority areas of focus:

1. EV Risk Assessments

Members have shared their respective risk assessments, experiences and organisational challenges associated with managing EV-related incidents. This collaborative approach has helped develop a better understanding of the risks faced across different sectors and highlighted opportunities for greater alignment.

One of the key actions arising from these discussions is a review being undertaken by National Highways of its existing risk assessment. This work is exploring the potential for lightly damaged electric vehicles to be moved from the carriageway to a relative place of safety where appropriate, helping to improve network availability while maintaining safety for responders and road users.

2. Consistency of Handover Processes and Documentation

The group has recognised the importance of clear and consistent information sharing between agencies involved in EV incidents. Discussions have focused on improving recovery protocols to strengthen joint working and ensure a common understanding of vehicle condition, risks and operational requirements throughout the incident lifecycle.

This work includes the development of standardised handover documentation and the introduction of an EV vehicle sticker to support the effective transfer of key safety information between responders, recovery operators and storage providers.

3. EV Vehicle Storage

The safe storage of electric vehicles following recovery remains an important area of focus for all stakeholders. The group is reviewing existing guidance to establish a shared understanding of current requirements and identify how this guidance can be applied consistently and practically across the industry.

The objective is to support a proportionate, evidence-based approach to vehicle storage that balances safety requirements with operational practicality for recovery operators and other partners.

Through these workstreams, the group aims to develop practical solutions that improve safety, consistency and collaboration across the sector, while supporting the continued transition to electric vehicles.

The group has met regularly throughout 2026, with strong engagement and representation from all participating organisations.
